What type of repairs are carried out at RS Motor on diesel engines?

By way of summary, we present several types of parts repairs, which are those that RS Motor carries out on a daily basis at its facilities located in Spain.

  • Cylinder head overhaul: We replace the elements susceptible to wear such as valves, seats, valve guides, valve sleeves (depending on the cylinder head model), O-rings… In addition to the above, it is often necessary to repair or machine the cylinder head shell, which we can also carry out at RS Motor. Once the cylinder head is restored, we proceed with a final hydraulic test.
  • Connecting rod reconditioning: Verification of the parallelism of the connecting rod body. If it is within the dimensions required by the manufacturer, new connecting rod foot bushes and new bolts or studs are installed.
  • Check of starter motors or starters: Thanks to RS Motor’s specialised electrical workshop, where there is specific equipment to check whether starters are in good condition or not, RS Motor can repair electric or compressed air starters.
  • Ultrasonic intercooler cleaning: Disassembly of the intercooler, ultrasonic cleaning, mechanical cleaning of covers and body (with specific tools), replacement of sealing elements, complete assembly and final hydraulic test.
  • Check of crankshaft measurements: Dimensional verification of all crankshaft measurements using equipment specially designed for this purpose.

  • Lube oil cooler overhaul: Complete disassembly, replacement of sealing elements, assembly and final hydraulic test.

There are many types of maintenance that can be carried out on marine or industrial diesel engines. Among these, RS Motor specialises in the ones mentioned below:

  • Corrective maintenance: Corrective maintenance is the work that the engine is forced to carry out when it suffers an unscheduled stoppage. There are many causes, the most common of which are seizure, high temperatures, high pressures, electronic failures, etc. ….. In order to minimise engine downtime and avoid loss of production, all the work required to restart the engine is carried out
  • Preventive maintenance: Maintenance that is linked to the number of hours that the engine has been running. This interval of hours is always marked by the engine manufacturer, so it is the manufacturer who marks the frequency with which we must carry out this maintenance on the engine, in order to also try to avoid breakdowns. Within preventive maintenance, we can distinguish between minor preventive maintenance and major preventive maintenance, usually called overhaul. The work to be carried out in each maintenance, as well as the hours, are always specified by the manufacturer in his maintenance plan.

This time we show how RS Motor repairs an industrial diesel engine, which develops between 1.7 MW and 1.8 MW of power.

One of the most important tasks is to check the crankshaft dimensions. If everything is in accordance with the specifications, we start with the replacement of the bearings or main bearings, the reconditioning of the connecting rods at RS Motor…

On some occasions, it is necessary to carry out some work such as the machining of the upper and/or lower part of the engine block. The same applies to cylinder heads if the cylinder head is not in good condition. Apart from the replacement of components susceptible to wear such as valves, seats, valve guides, springs… sometimes the cylinder head shell may be damaged due to the action of water over time. As a consequence, RS Motor is able to machine and plan the cylinder head faces and seats (only when possible) so that they can be reused.

Other important engine parts that RS Motor has to repair, refurbish or recondition are: intercoolers, oil coolers, pumps,… Once these elements are repaired or reconditioned, they are subjected to a final hydraulic test in order to verify the absence of leaks.

Finally, when all the work is completed, RS Motor fully assembles the engine for subsequent shipment either to the customer’s vessel or to the customer’s plant.

In other words, an efficient technical service, combined with the quality of the spare parts, means that the engine can be up and running on a more regular basis.
