This week we want to present another of the projects carried out in our cogeneration, gas, diesel, and marine engine repair workshop. In this case, with a Jenbacher gas engine overhaul of a plate heat exchanger belonging to the installation of a Jenbacher Series 6 engine.
PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER IN JENBACHER GAS ENGINE OVERHAUL
The plate heat exchanger is an ingenious and highly efficient device that we review at our Jenbacher gas engine overhaul used in a variety of industrial applications to effectively transfer heat between two fluids. This system is made up of a series of corrugated plates that are stacked and sealed together, forming a compact and functional assembly. The arrangement of these plates is key to its operation, as it allows for the creation of alternating channels through which the hot and cold fluids circulate.
As the hot fluid enters the cooler, it is directed towards one of these channels, while the cold fluid advances through an adjacent channel. This alternating design ensures that while one fluid loses heat, the other simultaneously absorbs it. The proximity of the channels is critical, as it minimizes the distance between the two fluids, facilitating more efficient heat transfer.
PLATE COOLER RECONDITIONING PROCESS FOR JENBAHCER GAS ENGINE OVERHAUL
The reconditioning of a plate heat exchanger consists of several phases detailed below:
Preliminary hydraulic testing: Conduct a hydraulic test to assess the integrity of the system and ensure there are no leaks before proceeding with the reconditioning.
Disassembly of components: Release the tightening tension holding the plates together in the frame and proceed with disassembling the components, separating the parts for individual inspection.
Cleaning of the exchanger plates: Subject the exchanger plates to an ultrasonic cleaning process to efficiently eliminate any sediment buildup, deposits, or other contaminants. Subsequently, perform a mechanical cleaning of the plates and all components.
Replacement of sealing gaskets: These gaskets are essential components that ensure an effective seal between two surfaces, preventing fluids—whether liquids or gases—from escaping. Over time and with use, gaskets can deteriorate due to various factors, such as pressure, extreme temperature, exposure to chemicals, or simply due to natural wear and tear.
Renewal of plates if necessary: The condition of the plates is assessed, and those showing significant wear or damage are replaced, ensuring the use of compatible spare plates.
Priming and painting of the frame: Priming and painting are applied to the cooler frame to provide protection against corrosion and enhance its durability.
Complete assembly of the exchanger: All parts of the exchanger are reassembled, ensuring they are correctly positioned and adjusted.
Final hydraulic test: A final hydraulic test is conducted to verify that the reconditioned system functions correctly and is leak-free.
SPECIAL ATTENTION TO DETAILS FOR THE JENBACHER GAS ENGINE OVERHAUL
In this case, the hydraulic test is successful, meaning that there is no apparent communication between the circuits or any leaks outside the exchanger. The quality of both the gaskets and the new plates used during the reconditioning of this water/oil plate exchanger gives our client full certainty and confidence that it will fulfill its purpose without any problems.
The potential consequences of a leak or mixing of fluids emphasize the importance our technicians place on this concept. It is crucial that each gasket and plate is perfectly installed.
