Complete Overhaul (E70) of an MWM TCG 2016 V16: From Worn Engine to Factory Condition

Updated on August 3, 2026

The overhaul, or E70 maintenance, is the most far-reaching intervention in the life of an MWM engine: the engine is completely disassembled, every component is verified and the unit is returned to factory condition. In this article we share a real case carried out in our workshop on an MWM TCG 2016 V16 cogeneration engine, with one clear objective: the shortest possible plant downtime.

The challenge: a full E70 with minimum downtime

The engine arrived at our facilities without the alternator and with a clear premise: carry out all necessary repairs within a very tight schedule to minimise plant downtime.

Meeting such tight schedules on a major overhaul is only possible for three reasons:

  • Our own warehouse with a wide stock of new and reconditioned MWM spare parts, which eliminates procurement delays.
  • Material planning and forecasting before the engine is opened.
  • A technical team specialised in MWM (Deutz), Jenbacher and Guascor engines, working to documented processes.

Work performed during the E70 overhaul

E70 maintenance involves a complete inspection of the engine. After full disassembly, every part is checked and a technical decision is made on what is verified, what is reconditioned and what is replaced. On this MWM TCG 2016 V16, the main work was:

Camshaft verification: it is measured before deciding whether to recover or replace it.
  • Verification of the engine block and crankshaft condition.
  • Replacement of radial and axial main bearings and crankshaft seals.
  • Replacement of cylinder liners, pistons, rings and piston pins.
  • Reconditioning of connecting rods with dimensional analysis, and replacement of small-end and big-end bearings and bolts.
  • Complete reconditioning of the cylinder heads.
  • Camshaft verification and tappet replacement.
  • Inspection and reconditioning of the throttle valve.
  • Reconditioning of the intercooler, with ultrasonic cleaning of the tube bundle, and of the oil cooler.
  • Replacement of spark plugs, ignition coils and ignition cables.
  • Replacement of UPF, oil and air filters.
  • Replacement of the torsional vibration damper, engine silentblocks and cooling system compensators.
  • Inspection of the exhaust manifolds and replacement of the compensators between sections.
  • Replacement of all gaskets and O-rings involved in assembly.
  • Reconditioning and testing of the starter motor.
  • Complete priming and painting of the engine.

The turbocharger reconditioning was, in this case, handled by the customer.

Genuine OEM parts: the foundation of a reliable overhaul

All the spare parts used are genuine MWM Deutz and/or original OEM parts supplied by RS Motor. That is what guarantees the quality of the assembly, ensures the correct operation of the unit and reduces the risk of unforeseen breakdowns affecting plant performance.

An overhaul is not swapping parts until the engine starts: it is returning the critical components to factory condition, with measurements to back it up.

At your plant or in our workshop

This overhaul was carried out entirely at our facilities, but our team also travels to cogeneration plants to perform short, medium or major maintenance on site, including disassembly of the engine at the customer plant and its reconnection and commissioning after the work.

Is your MWM engine approaching its overhaul?

If you operate an MWM TCG 2016 or TCG 2020 engine and its E70 window is approaching, write to us. We will assess the actual condition of your engine, propose the right scope and plan the intervention so downtime is as short as possible.
